Kilimanjaro Routes - which One to Choose?

Choosing the rigth Kilimanjaro route can be diffifcult. Let me tell you everything you need to know before choosing your route to the peak.

Embarking on the exhilarating journey to the summit of Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak, is a dream for many adventure enthusiasts, including you, I guess.

However, with six different routes to choose from, each offering unique experiences and challenges, selecting the right route is crucial for a successful and fulfilling climb. Before making your decision, here are several factors to consider:

PHYSICAL FITNESS AND EXPERIENCE

Assess your physical fitness level and hiking experience. Some routes, such as the Lemosho and the Northern Circuit routes, offer longer itinieraries and more gradual ascents, providing better acclimatization opportunities. If you are a novice climber or prefer a more gradual ascent, these routes might be more suitable for you. More experienced climbers might opt for the challenging Umbwe route, known for its steep and challenging terrain.

SCENERY AND LANDSCAPE

Each route showcases diverse landscapes and scenery. The Machame route, often referred to as the 'Whiskey Route', provides breathtaking views and varied terrain, while the Marangu route, also known as the 'Coca-Cola Route', offers a more straightforward path with hut accommodations. Consider the type of environment you would prefer to traverse during your climb.

CROWD LEVELS AND ATMOSPHERE

The level of solitude and the atmosphere along each route can vary significantly. Routes like the Umbwe, Rongai, Marangu and Northern Circuit are known for their quieter trails, while the Machame and Lemosho routes tend to be more popular and can be busier.

ACCLIMATIZATION AND SUMMIT SUCCESS RATES

Research the acclimatization profiles and success rates of each route. Routes with longer itinieraries generally offer better acclimatization opportunities and higher success rates due to the more gradual ascent, such as the Lemosho and Northern Circuit routes.

CAMPING VERSUS HUTS

Consider whether you prefer camping og staying in mountain huts. The Marangu route offers hut accommodations while all other routes involve camping, providing a more immersive outdoor experience.

BUDGET AND TIME CONSTRAINTS

Your budget and time constraints will also play a role in route selection. Routes with longer itineraries generally offer better acclimatization but come with higher costs.

Carefully considering these factors will help you select the most suitable route for your Kilimanjaro adventure, ensuring a safe, enjoyable and memorable climb to the 'Roof of Africa'.
