Hikers on Mount Meru on a grassy path surrounded by green trees Mount Meru

Climb Mount Meru - the Complete Journey

Mount Meru, often referred to as the 'Little Brother' of Kilimanjaro, is the second-highest peak in Tanzania and the fifth highest in Africa. The mountain, a less crowded alternative for adventurous trekkers, is known not only for its diverse ecosystems but also for providing stunning views of the neighboring Mount Kilimanjaro.

Accommodation is in huts throughout the trip.

DAY 1: From Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut

You can hike from Momella gate to Miriakamba Hut on a short or on a long route. Both routes provide unique experiences and stunning views. Lunch will be served upon arrival at Miriakamba Hut, whichever route you choose.

The short route is a more direct ascent and therefore ideal for hikers with limited time or seeking a quicker climb. You will ascend through the lush forested slopes of the mountain and may encounter wildlife, such as colobus monkeys and bushbucks. The trail is well-marked and gradually gains elevation, providing scenic views of the surronding landscape.

The long route offers a more immersive and scenic experience compared to the short route. The trail traverses open grasslands, and moorlands and offers panoramic views of the plains and neighboring mountains. Wildlife sightings are frequent with opportunities to spot colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and a variety of bird species.

DAY 2: From Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

The trail leads through a steep section known as the 'Elephant's Ridge'. This part of the hike involves a steady climb on rocky terrain, requiring some scrambling and steady footing. Along the way, you may be able to spot wildlife such as buffalo and colobus monkeys. As you ascend further, you enter the moorland zone characterized by heather and giant lobelia plants. The vegetation becomes more sparse, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The path gradually leads to the Saddle, a wide expanse of open grassland situated between the Little Meru and the main summit. Lunch will be served upon arrival at Saddle Hut.

DAY 3: From Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak - and from Socialist Peak to Miriakamba Hut

From the hut site, you make an early morning ascent through dense, emerald forests to conquer the summit of the montain. This involves a challenging climb with steep sections, possibly requiring ropes or scrambling in some areas.

However, it's worth all the effort, as the dramatic crater at the summit truly steals the show. Picture yourself standing on the edge of the natural wonder, gazing into the depths of a dormant volcano. The panoramic views that unfold before you are simply breathtaking.

After celebrating your achievement, you begin your descent towards Miriakamba Hut. The trail leads you through rocky terrain and lush vegetation, gradually taking you to lower altitudes. Lunch will be served upon arrival at Miriakamba Hut.

DAY 4: From Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate

You will continue your descent through the lush forest. Remember to keep an eye out for wildlife such as colobus monkeys, bushbucks, and a variety of bird species. It's not uncommon to spot these creatures as you make your way down.

Why is the summit of Mount Meru called Socialist Peak?

The summit of Mount Meru is commonly referred to as Socialist Peak due to its historical association with Tanzania's socialist ideology during the presidency of Julius Nyerere.

Nyerere, the first president of Tanzania, promoted socialist principles and policies during his time in office. As a result, many landmarks and features in Tanzania were given names with socialist connotations, including the peak of Mount Meru.
